Change in Russian Troop Tactics
Russian troops have changed their tactics for capturing cities, specifically Pokrovsk, using small assault groups' infiltration instead of mechanized assaults. Despite this, analysts believe that taking this city will not bring significant strategic advantages for Russia; on the contrary, it may lead to serious problems for Ukraine if Russia can weaken the logistics lines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
Tactical Advantages and Losses
According to reports, the occupation of Pokrovsk brings Russia minimal tactical advantages. Since launching an assault on Avdiivka in October 2023, Russian troops have lost over 1,000 armored vehicles and more than 500 tanks. In October 2025, in the Pokrovsk area, Russian forces captured about 30 square kilometers but suffered significant losses — up to 25,000 military personnel. In November this year, Ukraine cut off the rail link to Kramatorsk, complicating supply for Russian forces.

In his opinion, Russia's ability to weaken the positions of Ukrainian defenders with medium-range strikes is a troubling phenomenon. If this is not halted, Ukraine may face serious problems in the near and mid-term.
The enemy's objective to seize Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad by the New Year has proven unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Ukraine's defense forces maintain full control over the northern and central parts of Myrnohrad. Ukraine must find a way to counter the enemy's new tactics by developing effective methods for combating drones.
As Barros notes, the diplomacy of the Trump administration will be in vain until Russia's offensive is completely halted.
This situation indicates that, despite changes in Russian military tactics, the Ukrainian army demonstrates resilience and the ability to maintain control over strategically important territories. The continuation of the conflict and the adaptation of both sides to the new conditions of battle require constant attention from the international community, as the consequences could have far-reaching implications for regional security and stability.
