Accusations of the Russian Federation

The Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation accused the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew, of schismatic activities and cooperation with British intelligence services. According to the SVR, Bartholomew allegedly seeks to oust 'Russian Orthodoxy' from the Baltic countries. This accusation marks a new stage in the strained relations between Russia and the Patriarchate of Constantinople, especially after the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2019.

Bartholomew's Position and Religious Transformations in Ukraine

Bartholomew, who has actively opposed Russian aggression in Ukraine, condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine after February 24, 2022. His position has met with significant resistance from the Russian authorities, who accuse the patriarch of creating a schism in the Orthodox world.

In Ukraine, from 2022 to 2025, 1378 religious communities made the decision to transition to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. In 2022, 483 decisions were made, in 2023 - 471, in 2024 - 233, and in 2025 - 191.

These events highlight the growing tension between Russia and the Patriarchate of Constantinople, as well as reflect a broader picture of religious transformations in Ukraine against the backdrop of political conflicts.

The accusations made by the Russian Federation indicate the continuation of the conflict not only at the political level but also at the religious level, which could have serious consequences for the Orthodox community in the region. In the context of the war in Ukraine and changing religious loyalties, Bartholomew's position and his actions in support of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine may influence the further development of religious relations in the country and beyond.
