Strike on Naftogaz Gas Facilities
On July 6, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on Naftogaz gas extraction sites in the Kharkiv region. One employee was injured, received pre-hospital care, and was subsequently hospitalized. A fire broke out at one of the facilities as a direct result of the shelling. According to the company’s press service,
“after a combined nighttime attack on the capital, the Russians have been massively striking Naftogaz Group’s gas extraction sites in the Kharkiv region since early morning”.
Later that day, Russian troops carried out a second strike on the same already-targeted facilities. As a result, operations at the gas extraction site were temporarily suspended. The company reported that
“the enemy shelling continues, and personnel are in shelters. An assessment of the consequences will be conducted after the air raid alert in the region is lifted”.
Escalating Tensions and Threats
This is not the first instance of attacks on Naftogaz’s gas extraction assets. On July 4, Russian drones also struck one of the group’s gas extraction sites in the Poltava region. The situation remains tense and continues to evolve.
These strikes on Naftogaz’s gas infrastructure highlight the growing danger to Ukraine’s critical energy facilities amid the ongoing conflict. Targeting energy sites can severely disrupt gas supplies to both households and industries, particularly during the winter months. Moreover, the repeated attacks reveal the aggressor’s strategic objectives, suggesting a potential further escalation of hostilities in the region.
The recent attacks on Naftogaz facilities in the Kharkiv region follow a similar incident just days earlier, where Russian drones targeted gas extraction sites in Poltava. This pattern of aggression highlights a concerning trend in the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the vulnerabilities of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and the potential for further escalations in hostilities.
