Emergency Responders and Sumy Civilians Targeted in Russian Strikes, Leaving Several Wounded

Рятувальники та мешканці Сум постраждали внаслідок російських обстрілів, багато людей отримали поранення.

Rescue Workers and Civilians Come Under Fire

In the early hours of March 22, Russian forces shelled a team from Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) while they were inspecting an area hit by a previous strike. The attack occurred just as the rescue workers were preparing to return to their unit, with the enemy launching a second strike near a fire engine. Fortunately, none of the emergency personnel were injured in this incident.

In a separate attack, Russian invaders used a drone to strike a roadway in Sumy, wounding four civilians. The unmanned aerial vehicle hit the Zarichnyi district of Sumy, damaging civilian vehicles and residential buildings. This follows a pattern of attacks in the region, as on March 18, the Russian army had already targeted an administrative building in Sumy's Zarichnyi district with a strike drone. That earlier attack injured a minor—a 16-year-old boy who was at a bus stop near the impact site and required urgent hospitalization.

Civilians Respond During the Attack

Amid the violence, a 15-year-old schoolboy in Sumy provided first aid to a woman who had been shot while he was riding in a minibus. These attacks are part of Russia's ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine, now in its third year, which frequently sees civilian infrastructure and rescue workers targeted.

This is yet another deliberate strike against those who save and help others. This latest crime by the enemy once again shows they are waging war against those who rescue people. - SES

These events underscore the extreme danger faced by both rescue workers and civilians during military operations in Ukraine. Strikes deliberately aimed at service units highlight the adversary's increasing aggression and disregard for human life. The targeting of civilians, as well as those attempting to provide aid, exposes the brutality of the conflict and emphasizes the urgent need to protect the innocent in the combat zone.

The recent attacks on Sumy highlight the ongoing threat to both civilians and emergency responders in the region.
