Airstrike Targets Sloviansk
On March 29 at 11:50 a.m., Russian forces launched an airstrike on the city of Sloviansk, damaging the only maternity hospital in the Donetsk region along with other civilian sites in the city center. The attack left one 42-year-old man wounded. This assault is part of a broader pattern of strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which has escalated in recent months.
The strike involved three FAB-250 high-explosive glide bombs with planning and correction modules. The resulting detonation caused extensive damage across the civilian sector, including:
- an educational institution;
- several stores;
- private homes;
- and multiple apartment buildings.
The blast wave and shrapnel shattered windows and damaged roofs and building facades.
Forced Evacuation Ordered
In response to the deteriorating security situation, Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, signed an order for the mandatory evacuation of children from a section of the Sloviansk community. The evacuation covers more than 40 streets and lanes in Sloviansk. Fortunately, according to Sloviansk Mayor Vadym Lyakh:
"No babies, new mothers, or medical staff at the facility were injured."
This incident underscores the severe risks to civilians in conflict zones, particularly for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and children. The forced evacuation of children from the Sloviansk community highlights the urgent need for protective measures against further threats. The damage to critical infrastructure, especially medical facilities, jeopardizes access to essential healthcare services, which could have long-term consequences for public health.
The recent airstrike on Sloviansk is part of a troubling trend of escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. This incident not only exemplifies the immediate dangers faced by the local population but also raises concerns about the ongoing safety of children in the region.
