The Russian aggression on the territory of Ukraine has led to serious destruction of the natural environment. The State Environmental Inspection of Ukraine has recorded that the damages amount to 6.01 trillion hryvnias - this is a record amount of environmental damage in Europe in modern history.
According to estimates from the State Environmental Inspection, this sum includes damage to soils, atmospheric air, water resources, as well as the destruction of protected natural areas.
Fires, explosions, and toxic emissions are just the tip of the iceberg.
Consequences for Nature
Fires at oil depots and the destruction of hydraulic structures have long-lasting consequences. One of the most destructive cases was the fire in the village of Kryachky in the Kyiv region, which caused toxic emissions and soil contamination.
20% of Ukraine's protected areas have suffered damage from the war, including valuable ecosystems. Ukrainian soils have become victims of explosions and chemical substances, leading to changes in their structure and reduced fertility.
All these facts indicate that the war in Ukraine has serious negative consequences not only for people but also for the country's nature.
