Unique Windmill Destroyed by Russian Missile at Open-Air Museum Near Kyiv

Унікальна вітряна млина знищена російською ракетою в музеї під відкритим небом під Києвом.

Strike on Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage

During the night of July 6, a Russian missile attack severely damaged the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine. The affected windmill, originally from the village of Yunakivka in Sumy region, dates back to 1933–1934. As part of the Polissia exhibition, its destruction stands as further evidence of Russian aggression targeting Ukraine’s cultural legacy.

The blast wave shifted the tent-shaped roof of the windmill relative to its main structure. Additionally, the blades and their mountings were damaged beyond repair. Ukraine’s National Police have documented the incident and launched an investigation.

“The Yunakivka windmill survived decades of history, preserving the memory of entire generations of Ukrainians. Last night, it fell victim to Russian aggression. This is yet another crime against our heritage and further proof of Russia’s systematic war on Ukrainian culture. Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture is recording the aftermath, coordinating protection efforts for the monument, and continuing to inform international partners about Russia’s crimes against Ukrainian culture.”

Pattern of Damage to Cultural Sites

This incident follows other attacks, notably a large-scale combined assault on June 15. That attack killed five people and injured nearly forty. It also struck the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, setting the roof of the Dormition Cathedral on fire.

Damage to cultural landmarks in Ukraine has become a troubling trend, raising alarm among experts and international organizations like UNESCO. The situation demands urgent measures to safeguard Ukraine’s cultural heritage amid ongoing hostilities.

This attack is part of a broader campaign aimed at erasing Ukrainian cultural identity, continuing throughout the conflict. According to specialists, destroying cultural sites not only harms history but also impacts the national consciousness and memory of the Ukrainian people. In light of this, the international community must respond more vigorously to acts of aggression against cultural heritage to prevent further escalation of violence and protect Ukraine’s unique legacy.

The destruction of the Yunakivka windmill is part of a disturbing pattern of attacks on Ukraine’s cultural sites. Just weeks earlier, a coordinated assault on June 15 resulted in significant damage to important landmarks, including the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
