Russian Wrestlers Make Trip to Crimea

On March 23, 2026, a delegation of Russian wrestlers traveled to the annexed Crimea, violating Ukrainian law. The group included the director of the Crimean training center, Serhiy Donych, his first deputy, Bohdan Homeniuk, and members of the Russian national Greco-Roman wrestling team led by head coach Mykola Monov. They visited the International Children's Center 'Artek' on the occupied peninsula. Notably, the athletes entered Crimea without undergoing Ukrainian customs and border control, a direct contravention of Ukraine's legal procedures.

Controversy Over 'Neutral' Athlete Status

In a related development, the International Federation of Sport Climbing (World Climbing) has granted neutral status to athletes with ties to Russian military structures, despite its own rules prohibiting such affiliations. This policy has not prevented neutral-status Russian climber Milana Melnychenko from publicly expressing support for Russian President Vladimir Putin by liking his post on Instagram. The situation highlights ongoing debates about the separation of sports and politics in international competitions.

Prominent athletes participated in the propaganda event in Crimea, including:

  • Olympic champion and two-time world champion Musa Yevloyev,
  • World champion and two-time European champion Serhiy Semenov,
  • Olympic bronze medalist and multiple world and European champion Ali Ilyasov,
  • U20 World Championship winner Erzu Zakriiev.

Additionally, representatives from the Russian military club CSKA, who also hold neutral status, were involved. They include:

  • Yelizaveta Ivanova – a senior sergeant in the Russian army,
  • Mykola Yarylovets – a private in the Russian army,
  • Olena Krasovska – a sergeant in the Russian army,
  • Dmytro Fakirianov – a warrant officer in the Russian army,
  • Viktoriia Meshkova and Vladyslav Shevchenko.

The visit by Russian wrestlers to Crimea and their participation in events on annexed territory has raised serious concerns for Ukrainian authorities and the international community. It constitutes a direct violation of Ukrainian law and international legal principles. Furthermore, the involvement of athletes with military affiliations underscores the complex political landscape surrounding international sports during times of armed conflict.

The implications of the recent visit by Russian wrestlers to Crimea extend beyond national laws, as the recognition of neutral status for Russian athletes with military connections raises questions about the integrity of sports governance. This situation highlights the ongoing tension between athletic competition and geopolitical issues, further complicating the landscape for international sports organizations.
