Debate Over Reinstating Russian Teams in International Football
Russian propagandists from the outlet Sport24 have published a list of European countries they claim back the return of Russian clubs and the national team to international competitions. This information was reported by the Ukrainian media platform Glavcom. According to the list, the nations said to support Russia’s reinstatement are:
- Serbia
- Bulgaria
- Montenegro
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Cyprus
Spain and Portugal are not considered part of the hardline anti-Russian bloc, while Italy is said to maintain a wait-and-see approach.
However, a significant number of countries oppose allowing Russian teams back. These include:
- England
- Scotland
- Ireland
- Wales
- Germany
- France
- Belgium
- Netherlands
- Poland
- Ukraine
- Romania
- Baltic states
- Denmark
- Norway
- Sweden
- Finland
Belarus and Kazakhstan, both UEFA members, are in favor of Russia’s return.
FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from all tournaments indefinitely in 2022 due to Russia’s war against Ukraine. As a result, Russia missed the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup, was absent from Euro 2024, and will not participate in the 2026 World Cup. The country has also been barred from multiple editions of the Nations League.
2026 FIFA World Cup
All participants for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have now been determined. Teams finishing first or second in their groups will advance to the round of 16, along with the eight best third-placed sides from the group stage. Ukraine’s national football team lost 3–1 to Sweden in the semifinal of the World Cup 2026 playoffs. The match ended 3–1 (0–1), with Ponomarenko scoring in the 90+1 minute, while Gyökeres netted a hat-trick in the 6th, 51st, and 72nd minutes.
The debate over reinstating Russian sports teams in international events remains highly contentious, as most European nations oppose such a move—highlighting the ongoing political tensions in the region. Meanwhile, countries backing Russia’s return signal a desire for cooperation, revealing a divide in European stances on Russian aggression. Amid these developments, Ukraine’s national team, despite its playoff defeat, continues striving for its place on the global football stage—underscoring the role of sports achievements in national identity and sovereignty.
