Drone Incident Raises Alarm in Moldova
A Russian strike drone of the 'Geran' model breached Moldovan airspace and crashed close to residential buildings and an energy facility in the Telenești district. The event occurred near the village of Kiștelnic, approximately 100 meters from a nearby house. Local law enforcement reported no casualties as a result of the crash.
Authorities secured the crash site and summoned bomb disposal experts to inspect the area. Moldova's President Maia Sandu addressed the incident on the social media platform X, condemning the reckless violation. She stated:
“We condemn this latest dangerous act. In response, we have declared a staff member of the Russian embassy persona non grata.”
Repeated Breaches of Moldovan Airspace
This is not an isolated incident. Moldova has previously recorded multiple violations of its airspace by Russian drones and missiles, including:
- On August 25, 2026, Russian strike drones targeted the infrastructure at the Vinogradivka – Vulcănești border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova. Andrei Sybiga noted this marked the third Russian strike against border crossings between Ukraine and Moldova within a two-week span.
- On October 3, 2026, five aerial targets—three missiles and two drones—exploded over Moldovan territory. During the Russian attack near the Palanca – Mayaki – Udobne checkpoint, a projectile ricocheted into a passenger bus, injuring a Moldovan border police officer.
- In the early hours of October 11, 2026, a drone crashed and detonated inside Moldova, though national air surveillance systems did not detect any unauthorized border crossing at that time.
