Russian Fleet in a Dead End: Why Ships Cannot Be Repaired in the Black Sea

Військово-морські сили Росії стикаються з серйозними труднощами у ремонті кораблів в Чорному морі.

The Situation of the Russian Fleet in the Black and Azov Seas

The Russian fleet in the Black and Azov seas has found itself in a strategic dead end, facing serious difficulties in maintaining and repairing its ships. The naval forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, represented by Dmytro Pletenchuk, noted that the waters of both seas are effectively closed to the enemy, complicating the situation for the fleet of the Russian Federation.

Critical Problems of the Russian Fleet

One of the critical problems faced by the Russian fleet is the inability to service vessels. According to Pletenchuk, the Russians cannot leave ships in docks even for repairs, as a stationary vessel becomes an ideal target for the enemy. By the end of the year, Russian forces lost several units of aviation in Crimea, indicating a decrease in their military capability.

  • The ship and boat composition remains unchanged.
  • It has no prospects for further adequate presence in this region.
  • At the end of 2025, several vessels were destroyed in Crimea.

At the same time, the People's Republic of China remains the country receiving the most cargo through the grain corridor, with European countries in second place. Thus, the Russian fleet continues to lose control over the sea, threatening its operational capabilities.

The situation of the Russian fleet in the Black and Azov seas underscores the importance of control over waterways for the military strategy of the Russian Federation. The loss of repair and maintenance capabilities for ships could significantly limit their ability to perform combat missions. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s control over these waters may become an important factor in ensuring regional security and continuing the strategic supply of grain to other countries.
