Overnight Assault on Vynohradivka International Crossing
In the early hours of August 25, a Russian-launched Shahed drone struck the Vynohradivka international checkpoint along the Ukraine-Moldova border, marking the latest in a string of drone-related incidents along the frontier. The blast damaged the facility's infrastructure and sparked a fire that emergency crews managed to contain. Crossing operations at Vynohradivka have been temporarily halted, with no people or vehicles being processed until further notice. Authorities are diverting traffic to alternative border posts that remain operational.
Kyiv promptly alerted Moldovan border officials to the situation. Moldova's Foreign Minister, Sybiga, said that on August 20, drone wreckage was discovered near Giurgiulești, roughly one kilometer from the Ukrainian frontier. Moldovan experts have preliminarily identified the fragments as belonging to a Geran-type unmanned aerial vehicle. At the site, investigators found two craters, metallic debris, and pieces of the engine along with other drone components.
Other Drone Incidents in the Region
On August 9, a combat drone exploded near the southern Moldovan village of Crocmaz in Ștefan Vodă district. Police said it was the first time such a device had been recorded on the country's territory. Separately, during the night of July 13, a Russian strike drone that was part of an attack on Ukraine entered Moldovan airspace and exploded near Copanca in Căușeni district. Moldova's Defense Ministry confirmed that the vehicle was a Russian Shahed (Geran-2) drone.
In another incident, Russian drones damaged the Tabaki international checkpoint on the Ukraine-Moldova border on the night of August 21, also forcing a temporary suspension of passenger and vehicle crossings. In light of these events, Ukraine's State Border Guard Service has urged citizens and transport companies to plan their routes accordingly and to use other open checkpoints when crossing the Ukraine-Moldova border.
These attacks highlight a growing security threat along the Ukraine-Moldova border, with potentially serious implications for economic and social ties between the two countries. Temporary closures could cause delays in freight and passenger traffic and raise concerns among local residents and businesses.
