Tabaki International Checkpoint on the Moldovan Border Damaged by Russian Drone Strike
Drone Attack Hits Tabaki Border Crossing
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Overnight into August 21, Russian drones damaged the Tabaki international checkpoint on Ukraine's border with Moldova. The strike, which used Shahed-type drones, left buildings and other structures at the facility damaged and triggered a fire that emergency workers were able to put out quickly. Because of the incident, the crossing is temporarily closed to pedestrians and vehicles, and travelers are being sent to alternative checkpoints. Ukraine has already told Moldova about the situation.
More Drone Incidents in the Area
On August 20, drone debris believed to be from a Geran-type unmanned aerial vehicle was found near Giurgiulesti, about one kilometer from the Ukrainian border, according to Moldova's Foreign Minister, Sybiha, who confirmed the find. At the site, investigators recorded two craters, metal fragments, and parts of the drone's engine. The investigation is still under way.
- On August 9, a combat drone exploded in southern Moldova near the village of Crocmaz, the first confirmed instance of such a device on the country's territory.
- During the night of July 12-13, a Russian strike drone meant for targets in Ukraine crossed into Moldovan airspace and exploded close to the village of Copanca in the Căușeni district.
The border area remains tense, with drones now a recurring military factor. This incident is another sign of how the spillover from Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine is affecting neighboring countries.
The latest events point to rising military activity along the frontier and carry clear security risks for both Ukraine and Moldova. Drone attacks, along with drones coming down on Moldovan territory, highlight the need for stronger defenses and more vigilant airspace monitoring in both states. They could also affect political and diplomatic ties among Ukraine, Moldova, and Russia.
