May 24 Attack on Kyiv
On May 24, Russian shelling targeted six regions of Ukraine, including the capital, where roughly 300 buildings sustained damage. In Kyiv alone, 87 people were hurt—among them three children. Twenty-one individuals required hospitalization, and two others lost their lives. Notably, the residence of Albania’s ambassador to Ukraine was also affected.
Cleanup efforts are underway in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi and Podilskyi districts. Nearly 100 personnel from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) are involved. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 'In the Shevchenkivskyi and Podilskyi districts of Kyiv, work continues to eliminate the consequences of yesterday’s Russian strikes. Almost 100 SESU workers are engaged. Overall, roughly 300 objects in Kyiv were damaged. Most of them are residential buildings—throughout the day yesterday, reports came in regarding varying degrees of damage to nearly 150 private houses and apartment blocks.'
International Response
Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Orbán, condemned the assault on Kyiv, stressing the need for a coordinated international reaction to events in Ukraine. In response to the shelling, Ukraine is demanding an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, as well as a joint session of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation and the OSCE Permanent Council.
“Overall, six of our regions were affected by yesterday’s shelling. There must be more protection: air defense support is a daily priority of Ukraine’s foreign policy work at all levels. And there must definitely be pressure on the aggressor and accountability for all these strikes,”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
This attack underscores the persistent threat Russia poses to Ukraine and the critical importance of international support amid the armed conflict. The global community’s response—including calls for a UN Security Council session—reflects Ukraine’s efforts to secure additional defense measures and raise awareness about the situation in the region. As tensions escalate, strengthening air defense systems and coordinating with international partners remain top priorities.
The recent attack on Kyiv highlights the ongoing humanitarian impact of the conflict, with many individuals still facing serious health challenges. Currently, 21 people remain hospitalized following the missile strike, illustrating the urgent need for continued support and intervention in the region.
