Online Marketplace Fraud Case
A 37-year-old resident of the Kyiv region has been formally notified of suspicion in a fraud case involving the online sale of goods that did not exist. His alleged actions resulted in seven buyers suffering a combined loss of nearly 800,000 Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $20,000 USD). The suspect's scheme reportedly operated from July 2025 through January 2026, during which he posted fake advertisements on the popular Ukrainian platforms Prom and OLX.
The Scammer's Methods
The suspect offered the following items for sale:
- Generators
- Portable cabins
- Stackers
His method involved posting the ads, corresponding with potential buyers, and sending invoices to bank accounts under his control. Once the payments were received, he would cease all communication with the victims. This type of scam has become increasingly common on buy-and-sell platforms worldwide.
According to the investigation, procedural oversight for this case is being handled by the Holosiivskyi District Prosecutor's Office in Kyiv. The incident was publicly disclosed by the press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.
This case exemplifies the rise of fraud in online sales, a trend that accelerated during the pandemic as more people turned to digital platforms for purchases. Given the substantial financial losses incurred by victims, it is crucial for law enforcement agencies and e-commerce platforms to implement stronger measures to enhance security and protect consumers from such deceptive schemes.
