Forged ID Scheme Dismantled
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has shut down a criminal operation that produced counterfeit official identification for military and law enforcement agencies, which was used to help individuals avoid mandatory military conscription. The operation resulted in the arrest of the scheme's organizer and the seizure of a large quantity of materials related to the illicit business.
The forged documents were designed to mimic IDs from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Main Directorate of Intelligence, and the National Police. Their purpose was to allow holders to evade mobilization and pass through military checkpoints without hindrance. This document forgery operation was run from rented offices across Ukraine, with the service costing clients between $3,000 and $5,000 per fake ID.
Arrest and Evidence Seized
The organizer of the scheme was identified as a former serviceman from one of Ukraine's security and defense agencies. He enlisted 18 accomplices to assist in the production and distribution of the fraudulent documents. During raids by law enforcement, the following items were confiscated:
- smartphones
- computer equipment
- forged stamps and seals
- weapons and ammunition
Authorities also seized approximately one hundred fake SBU IDs, along with counterfeit IDs for other military and law enforcement formations. Additionally, they confiscated fabricated orders, certificates, and pro-Russian propaganda leaflets. As investigators reported,
"the suspects entered client data into the blanks for the forged IDs and inserted their photos following the template of genuine documents."
The organizer of the criminal scheme has been formally notified of suspicion under an article of the criminal code for obstructing the lawful activities of Ukraine's Armed Forces during martial law. He is currently in custody and faces up to eight years of imprisonment. This operation underscores the determination of Ukrainian law enforcement to combat crimes that undermine the country's defense capabilities during the ongoing conflict.
Dismantling this criminal network marks a significant step in safeguarding Ukraine's national security amidst the continuing war. The forgery of official documents to facilitate draft evasion poses a direct threat to the strength of the nation's defensive forces. The SBU's actions to expose and halt such crimes highlight the state's broader efforts to counter internal destabilization and maintain security in wartime.
