SBU Completes Pre-Trial Investigation of Russian Agent
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has concluded its pre-trial investigation into a Russian Federation agent who attempted to assassinate volunteer and activist Serhiy Sternenko, and has now submitted the case to court. The suspect faces charges under the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including state treason, attempted murder, and the illegal possession of a firearm.
Case Details
According to the investigation, the female suspect, a Kyiv resident, was recruited by Russian intelligence services while seeking quick income. In April 2025, she began surveilling Serhiy Sternenko and moved into the same residential complex. Her assignment was to eliminate the activist near his home.
On May 1, 2025, as Sternenko was leaving his building, the assailant fired multiple shots, with one bullet striking him in the leg. SBU officers detained the attacker at the scene.
Searches of her property uncovered a phone containing evidence of collaboration with Russian intelligence. In a separate apartment, components for an improvised explosive device were found. The accused had received a Makarov pistol and ammunition from unidentified individuals in the Kyiv region. She faces up to 15 years in prison.
The defendant is charged under three articles:
- State treason;
- Completed attempted murder for hire, committed by prior conspiracy by a group of persons;
- Illegal carrying and storage of a firearm.
The complex of operational and investigative measures was conducted by the SBU under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General.
This case highlights the persistent threat posed by Russian intelligence operations within Ukraine. Serhiy Sternenko is a prominent and controversial activist known for his role in Ukraine's post-2014 civil society. The incident underscores the ongoing risks faced by public figures and the critical role of security services in countering foreign-sponsored violence aimed at destabilizing the country.
This incident is not an isolated case, as the Ukrainian Security Service recently thwarted another assassination plot targeting a high-ranking military official. These events underscore the ongoing dangers posed by Russian operatives in Ukraine and the urgent need for vigilance in safeguarding national security.
