Contract Killing of Ukrainian Soldier Thwarted
An FSB agent has been detained by Ukraine's SBU military counterintelligence and the National Police for attempting to assassinate a Ukrainian soldier in Zaporizhzhia. The assailant attacked the officer in an industrial area, stabbing him six times in the neck, chest, abdomen, and right leg. The victim was hospitalized in critical condition and admitted to intensive care. This incident highlights the persistent hybrid warfare tactics employed by Russian intelligence services against Ukrainian defenders.
Arrest and Investigation Details
The detained individual is a 25-year-old unemployed man who was seeking easy money by carrying out tasks for the FSB. He was arrested at a relative's home where he was attempting to hide. The address for the attack was provided by a handler from the Russian Federation. To lure the soldier, the FSB created a fake female profile on a dating website. A knife, smartphone, and tablet belonging to the assailant were found at the crime scene.
The FSB agent has been formally charged under Part 3 of Article 15 and Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He is now in custody and faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment with property confiscation. This follows a previous operation where the SBU prevented the contract killing of Serhiy Filimonov, commander of the 108th Separate Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, demonstrating the ongoing efforts of security services to counter such threats. These operations are part of a broader pattern of targeted violence against Ukrainian military personnel.
