Ukrainian Security Service Targets Russian Military Infrastructure in Crimea
Operatives from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) have carried out attacks on Russian air defense systems and military airfields in the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula. Special forces from the 'Alpha' Center for Special Operations struck targets near the Kerch Strait, as well as at the Saki and Gvardiyske airbases. At the Saki airfield, four hangars used to store aircraft were destroyed.
Near Kerch, the following equipment was hit:
- two components of an S-400 surface-to-air missile system;
- two Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and gun systems.
Notably, this marks the fourth Pantsir-S1 system that 'Alpha' has eliminated in this area.
SBU Operations and Their Aftermath
During the same night leading into June 24, drones from the Unmanned Systems Forces cut power to occupied Sevastopol by striking the city's main electrical substation. As the SBU stated,
“Russian occupiers are losing control over the skies of Crimea”- Security Service of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the agency emphasized that
“the SBU will continue to methodically turn Crimea into a zone of constant losses for the Russian army until it leaves the Ukrainian peninsula”- Security Service of Ukraine.
The special forces of the 'Alpha' Center for Special Operations acted on the orders of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
These actions by the SBU highlight an intensification of Ukrainian efforts to regain control over temporarily occupied territories. Strikes on strategic Russian military assets in Crimea could significantly impair the operational capabilities of Russian forces in the region. The continuation of such operations underscores Ukraine's intent to restore sovereignty over all its territory, including Crimea, and demonstrates a readiness for active measures amid escalating tensions in the area.
These recent operations are part of a broader strategy by Ukraine to weaken Russian military presence in Crimea. In a related context, a significant special operation recently targeted the Crimean Bridge and Port Kavkaz, further demonstrating Ukraine's commitment to disrupting Russian supply lines and infrastructure.
