Russian Intelligence Agent Uncovered
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has exposed an agent of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) who was attempting to pass classified information about the country's latest unmanned aerial vehicles. The arrest took place in the office of an associate professor at a research center within the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine academy, just as he tried to send documents to his handler. The suspect has been charged with high treason and placed in pretrial detention without the possibility of bail.
The individual, a lecturer at a leading defense ministry academy, had been copying design documents for advanced attack drones used by Ukraine's defense forces. He also prepared negative assessments of prototype unmanned and robotic systems, labeling them as unpromising and allegedly unsuitable for combat. According to the SBU, these evaluations were groundless and intended to undermine domestic weapons development.
“The official also unjustifiably dismissed as unpromising the weapons designs of Ukrainian manufacturers that were undergoing expert review of their tactical and technical characteristics,” the SBU stated.
The suspect was recruited through an acquaintance based in Russia. In exchange for completing tasks, he hoped to secure a position in a Russian occupation administration. During a search of his premises, authorities seized two mobile phones and computer equipment. SBU investigators have charged him under Article 111, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers high treason committed under martial law. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment and confiscation of property.
SBU Counterintelligence Operations
“Military counterintelligence of the Security Service, with the assistance of the Minister of Defense, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and the leadership of the military academy, thwarted another attempt by the Russians to obtain Ukraine's latest developments in unmanned technology,” the SBU emphasized.
In a separate operation, military counterintelligence also uncovered a Russian informant in Poltava who was tracking the coordinates of Ukrainian defense forces to facilitate missile and drone strikes. The informant was identified as a local unemployed individual.
This incident underscores the critical role of counterintelligence in safeguarding Ukraine's national security, particularly amid the ongoing war. The exposure of a GRU agent and other informants highlights the SBU's active efforts to prevent leaks of strategically vital information that could compromise the country's defense capabilities.
