Ukraine's Security Service Attack on Russia's Oil Platform

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has for the first time attacked a Russian oil platform in the Caspian Sea, leading to the cessation of oil and gas extraction from over 20 wells. The target of the attack was the Filanovsky platform, owned by the 'Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft' company. According to reports, at least four strikes were recorded on this platform, marking the first damage to Russian oil infrastructure in this region.

Consequences of the Attack

The Filanovsky field has significant reserves, including 129 million tons of oil and 30 billion cubic meters of gas. This attack occurs in the context of broader military actions, as on the night of December 11, drones also targeted two strategically important facilities on Russian territory. Among them were:

  • Thermal power station in the Dorogobuzh district of Smolensk;
  • The chemical production facility 'Acron' in Veliky Novgorod.

These actions by the SBU have created problems for aviation, particularly a plane with the Prime Minister of Armenia was unable to land immediately due to the prevailing situation. The attack on the oil platform represents a significant step in the military operations taking place in the region, indicating a shift in approaches to conducting military actions.

This attack may have far-reaching consequences for both Russia's economy and energy security in the region.

The cessation of extraction from the Filanovsky platform could lead to an increase in oil and gas prices on international markets. Furthermore, it highlights new tactical capabilities of Ukrainian forces, which appear to be adapting to the conditions of modern warfare, focusing on critically important economic targets of the enemy.
