Russian Agent Arrested in Kyiv
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) cyber specialists have thwarted an enemy attempt to gain access to Starlink terminals within the country. In Kyiv, a Russian agent was detained for illegally registering communication terminals intended for Russian occupation forces. According to the SBU, the suspect was carrying out orders from Russian intelligence services and had deserted his military unit in the Kharkiv region.
The individual, recruited by the enemy, was hiding in rented apartments in the capital and searching for income opportunities on specialized Telegram channels. Russian intelligence operatives offered him financial compensation in exchange for collaboration. The agent registered a Starlink station in his own name using credentials provided by his handler in Russia, and also enlisted an acquaintance to register another terminal under her name. Plans were in place to involve 20 more people to verify satellite communication stations.
Arrest and Consequences
The SBU apprehended the agent red-handed at a postal operator's office where he was attempting to register another Starlink terminal. All terminals registered by the suspect have been blocked. During searches, law enforcement seized a mobile phone containing evidence of his work for the occupiers. SBU investigators have charged the agent under Article 111, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason under martial law), and he is currently in custody.
Additionally, in Kropyvnytskyi, a woman was detained for attempting to register Starlink terminals for the occupiers. She registered one terminal in her own name and planned to transfer the credentials to Russia. These actions highlight the enemy's active efforts to equip their agents with communication tools on Ukrainian territory.
The arrests of the agent and the woman trying to register Starlink terminals for Russian occupiers underscore the critical role of cybersecurity in modern warfare.
The SBU is actively working to prevent the misuse of technologies that could threaten national security, and continues to identify and neutralize emerging threats within the country. These events also demonstrate the enemy's attempts to establish communication channels for their agents, which could complicate the situation on the front lines.
