Ukrainian Counterintelligence Operation Nabs Russian Spies
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has apprehended two agents working for Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). The individuals were detained on suspicion of state treason for gathering intelligence on the aftermath of a missile strike in the Lviv region. This operation highlights the persistent threat of Russian espionage networks operating within Ukraine's borders.
Operation Details and Suspects
According to the SBU, the agents were tasked with assessing the damage from a strike on civilian infrastructure in Lviv Oblast, which occurred overnight on January 8-9, 2026. One detainee is a 64-year-old resident of Mukachevo who was recruited remotely. The second is a 22-year-old unemployed neighbor of the first suspect. The younger agent traveled from Zakarpattia to Lviv Oblast after the attack to survey the strike sites, photograph them, and record coordinates using Google Maps. He then relayed this information to the older agent in Mukachevo, who subsequently reported to a handler in Russia.
The arrests were conducted simultaneously in Mukachevo and Lviv Oblast. During searches, electronic devices containing evidence were seized. The SBU also intercepted communications between the agents and their Russian handler; audio recordings of these conversations have been entered into the criminal case file. The suspects have been charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (state treason under martial law), which carries a potential penalty of life imprisonment with property confiscation.
The missile used in the Lviv Oblast attack was identified as an Oreshnik. The SBU displayed fragments of the weapon, including its guidance unit, engine parts, and orientation mechanisms.
