Corruption Scheme Uncovered in Khust Military Recruitment Office
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has exposed a corruption scheme operating within the Khust District Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support. On January 21, 2026, the head of the mobilization department, Major Yurii Haidura, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of $6,000 from a conscript. This arrest is part of Ukraine's ongoing, high-stakes anti-corruption drive, which is critical for maintaining military integrity during wartime.
Major Haidura, who acted in concert with other unidentified military personnel, promised the conscript that for this payment he would avoid being drafted for mobilization and would not be sent to a training center for combat preparation.
"In exchange for the money, the official promised not to carry out the conscription procedure during mobilization and not to send the man to a training center for basic military training."
Notably, the detained major's father is Anton Haidur, a former judge of the Mizhhiria District Court, who is already serving a 5-year prison sentence with property confiscation for a similar bribery offense. Law enforcement officials clarified these are two separate criminal cases, though linked by family ties.
Ukraine's Continued Anti-Corruption Fight
The exposure of this scheme in Khust is part of a broader, sustained campaign against corruption in Ukraine, which continues amid the challenges of mobilization and armed conflict. Major Haidura's arrest underscores how such abuses can directly undermine national security.
It also demonstrates that law enforcement agencies are actively working to detect and punish corrupt activities, particularly within critical sectors like military service.
