Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić ordered the army to be put on full combat alert on December 26.

A similar decision was made by the authorities in Kosovo, reports the Serbian publication 'Evening News'.

'Serbian Defense Minister Miloš Vučević stated that the reason for such a decision is allegedly the preparation of the Kosovo authorities for an attack on the barricades of Serbs in northern Kosovo,' the report says.

'Evening News' reported that Kosovo has also put its army on maximum combat readiness.

Serbian troops have been in a state of combat readiness at the border with Kosovo for some time. Officials claim that ethnic Albanians, who make up the majority in the region that declared independence in 2008, are oppressing Kosovo Serbs.

In the European Union, it is believed that Serbia and Kosovo are on the brink of a dangerous crisis and both sides are urged to fulfill their obligations under the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

On December 10, a new escalation involving Serbs began in northern Kosovo. They erected barricades on the roads of the region after the Kosovo police detained an ethnic Serb former law enforcement officer.

On December 11, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti urged the NATO mission in Kosovo to remove all barricades, as they violate the right to freedom of movement.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that Kosovo intends to attempt to 'resolve the Serbian problem' and accused 'part of the international community' of inaction while calling on Kosovo Serbs and Albanians to remain calm.
