Allegations Against Sergey Bubka

Sergey Bubka, the pole vault legend and International Olympic Committee member, is facing a formal campaign to revoke his Hero of Ukraine honor. The call comes from Yevhen Pronin, former acting president of the Ukrainian Athletics Federation, and Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, who is also Pronin's client. They accuse Bubka of actions and inaction during Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine that they deem incompatible with the nation's highest award.

Pronin notes that Bubka, one of Ukraine's most famous and influential sports figures, has been largely silent on the war, referring to it only vaguely as a 'misfortune.' It is also noted that Bubka left Ukraine on February 28, 2022. Later that year, he assumed the presidency of the International Masters Games Association (IMGA), an IOC-recognized body. Under his leadership, the IMGA permitted Russian athletes to compete under their own flag at the World Masters Games, a decision that sparked outrage among Ukrainian athletes.

Conflict with Ukrainian Athletes

In 2023, Ukrainian athletes barred Bubka from attending a team meeting at the World Championships. Pronin emphasizes that despite the critical need for support, Bubka did not approach Ukrainian competitors at international events in 2022. A 2023 Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling (CAS 2023/A/10093) revealed that in 2016, the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee (NOC), then led by Bubka, raised no objections when the Russian NOC incorporated Crimea and Sevastopol into its membership. This fact calls into question the effectiveness of the Ukrainian NOC's actions against Russia's 'sporting integration' of occupied territories.

Furthermore, in early 2023, Sergey Bubka and his brother Vasyl re-registered the firm 'Montblanc' in the Russian legal entity registry. The company's listed address is in Donetsk, with Vasyl Bubka named as director. In May 2023, 'Montblanc' secured three contracts for supplying significant quantities of fuel vouchers, which could be used in temporarily occupied territories.

Sergey Bubka will always remain a world record holder and a great athlete. But he will never remain a great Ukrainian. — Vladyslav Heraskevych

This statement captures the profound disappointment of Ukrainian athletes regarding Bubka's wartime conduct and his perceived stance on patriotic values. Pronin and Heraskevych are demanding an objective reassessment of Bubka's activities and his contribution to Ukrainian sport.

This controversy highlights the difficult ethical dilemmas facing Ukrainian sports figures during the war. While sport can serve as a unifying force for the nation, the actions or inaction of influential individuals can severely damage public trust and their own legacies. In a time of war, when national identity and patriotic solidarity are paramount, such accusations carry significant weight within Ukraine's athletic community and beyond.
