Ukraine's Top Diplomat Concludes Visit to Sweden

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has wrapped up his official trip to Sweden, which also included participation in a NATO ministerial meeting held in Helsingborg. This visit marked a significant milestone in advancing the strategic objectives set by President Zelenskyy, which centered on:

  • securing military assistance from NATO,
  • deepening defense collaboration,
  • bolstering the PURL framework,
  • opening new negotiation clusters with the EU,
  • emphasizing that any relaxation of pressure on Moscow is unacceptable,
  • addressing outstanding issues with Hungary while maintaining a constructive dialogue with Bulgaria.

During the trip, fresh commitments were secured under the PURL initiative. According to Sybiha, promised deliveries are arriving on schedule—and in some cases, even ahead of time. He also noted that, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, no delays or diversions of aid have occurred.

Meetings on the Sidelines of the NATO Session

A key highlight of the visit was a productive meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, whom Sybiha described as

“a great friend of ours who is doing a tremendous amount to strengthen the Alliance and ensure reliable support for Ukraine from allied nations.”

On the margins of the NATO meeting, Sybiha held his first face-to-face talks with the new foreign ministers of Bulgaria and Hungary. He reported tangible progress in discussions with his Hungarian counterpart and received clear signals from Bulgaria’s minister condemning Russian aggression and affirming that supporting Ukraine remains the only viable path. Sybiha noted that

“everyone acknowledges the successes of Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield and the effectiveness of asymmetric long-range ‘sanctions’ against Russia.”

The Ukraine-NATO Council convened at the Swedish King’s estate, Sofiero Slott, where a pair of Swedish Gripen jets flew overhead at the entrance. Speeches by Swedish leaders—including the King, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister—underscored the critical importance of backing Ukraine. Sybiha stressed the top priority: “to turn this support into concrete allied actions that strengthen our position both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table, with the goal of ending the war and restoring peace.”

This visit to Sweden and participation in NATO events represent key steps in reinforcing international support for Ukraine and advancing diplomatic ties with European partners. It also highlights Ukraine’s growing role on the global stage and the intensification of security cooperation with NATO and the EU—a development of critical importance given the current geopolitical landscape.

Following his successful visit to Sweden, Andrii Sybiha continues to advocate for stronger international support against Russian aggression. His recent tour of European capitals emphasizes the urgency of uniting efforts to increase pressure on Moscow.
