Statements from Ukraine's Foreign Minister

In an interview with the publication 'European Pravda,' Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, stated that holding Russia accountable for its aggression cannot be a subject for compromise in any negotiations. He emphasized that ensuring the aggressor faces justice is a fundamental and inseparable component of achieving a lasting and dignified peace for Ukraine. This stance, Sybiha noted, is a core principle shared by both Ukraine and its European partners, reflecting a broader international consensus on the need for accountability.

Work on a Special Tribunal

Efforts are currently underway to finalize the implementation agreement for establishing a special tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression committed by the Russian Federation. This agreement is in its final stages, with the document on the tribunal slated for approval at the ministerial level of the Council of Europe. Ukraine is also focused on expanding the number of states participating in the tribunal agreement, highlighting the critical importance of broad international support for this judicial mechanism.

Furthermore, Ukraine is working to secure premises for the tribunal's operations in the Netherlands. A Compensation Commission has already been launched to adjudicate reparations for victims of Russian aggression. Sybiha expressed hope that within the year, 25 countries will ratify the agreement on the Compensation Commission, marking a significant step toward securing justice for those who have suffered.

The Foreign Minister's statements underscore the centrality of international justice as a vital component of any future peace process for Ukraine.

The establishment of the special tribunal and the Compensation Commission demonstrates Ukraine's serious commitment to restoring justice following the conflict with Russia. Engaging the international community and securing support from other nations could substantially impact the success of these initiatives, potentially contributing to greater regional stability in the long term.
