Ukraine's Response to Hungarian Statements

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has responded to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's assertion that Hungary would not support Ukraine's accession to the European Union for the next century. Sybiha stressed that such declarations will not derail Ukraine's EU integration process. He stated:

This plan is doomed to fail, Mr. Prime Minister. Your statements will not stop Ukraine's European choice. — Andrii Sybiha

Viktor Orban, for his part, has claimed that for the next hundred years, there will be no Hungarian parliament that would vote for Ukraine's EU membership. He also accused the European Commission of promoting a hidden plan for EU expansion at Ukraine's expense. In response to these accusations, Sybiha added:

This plan is doomed to fail, Mr. Prime Minister. Your master in Moscow won't last 100 years even if you were ready to donate him all organs. And on the day Ukraine joins the EU, we will frame this headline in @ua_parliament to remember your lies for the next 100 years. — Andrii Sybiha

Strained Relations Between Ukraine and Hungary

These exchanges occurred against the backdrop of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticized European politicians showing loyalty to Moscow. This situation highlights the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Hungary, as well as the complex processes involved in Ukraine's integration into European structures. The dispute underscores the broader geopolitical rift within the EU regarding support for Ukraine.

These events reflect a sharpening of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Hungary, stemming from disagreements over Ukraine's European integration. The statements from political leaders of both countries emphasize not only national interests but also the geopolitical tension in the region, fueled by Russian influence. Such rhetoric threatens to undermine cooperation on key European initiatives, particularly regarding Ukraine's path to EU membership.
