Ukraine's Stance on Entry Bans for Russian Citizens
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for the European Union to implement a comprehensive ban on entry for citizens of the Russian Federation who have participated in the war against Ukraine. In a statement published on the social media platform X, Sybiha advocated for these individuals to be completely barred from entering the EU. This appeal is part of Kyiv's ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold Russia accountable for its full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Furthermore, the minister urged the EU to impose sanctions against Russia's 'shadow fleet' of vessels used to circumvent international restrictions. This call was made during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. Sybiha emphasized that the issue of holding Russia accountable for its aggression cannot be subject to compromise in any potential negotiations.
'This would set the right price for the wrong choice: every Russian who signs a contract to invade Ukraine will know that he is also signing a lifetime ban on entering Europe.' Andrii Sybiha
According to the minister, these measures would help establish a clear stance on the responsibility of Russian military personnel for their actions in Ukraine.
Calls for International Support
Minister Sybiha's appeals reflect Ukraine's drive to secure international backing on matters of security and accountability for aggression. They also underscore the importance of a definitive EU position on Russian aggression, which could shape the bloc's future policy towards Moscow. The EU has previously implemented multiple sanctions packages targeting Russian individuals and entities since the invasion began.
Implementing entry bans for Russians directly involved in the conflict forms part of Ukraine's broader strategy to isolate the aggressor state and protect its national interests.
