A New Product Hits Silpo's Shelves
Ukrainian supermarket chain Silpo has introduced a new item called 'Brine and a Pickle'—a 300 ml jar containing a single cucumber preserved in brine. Priced at 69.99 UAH, the product has ignited consumer discussions. This cost is significantly higher than the market price for fresh cucumbers in July-August 2025, when the average price in Ukrainian supermarkets ranged from 41.55 to 45 UAH per kilogram. Cucumbers were even cheaper at local markets.
Natural Ingredients and Consumer Appeal
The product is made without added vinegar, appealing to consumers who prefer natural ingredients in their food. The jar's label features the slogan 'Tomorrow will be good,' which may reflect a hope for an improvement in the general pricing situation for groceries. The product is marketed under the 'Nizhyn' brand.
Price increases for greenhouse cucumbers have also been recorded in Ukraine, which may be linked to the fact that a major portion of the domestic cucumber supply now consists of imports from Turkey.
The launch of 'Brine and a Pickle' at Silpo could signal a shift in Ukrainian consumer preferences, as people seek out more natural alternatives.
Amstid rising vegetable prices and food inflation, this novelty item is likely to generate interest from both consumers and retailers aiming to adapt their product ranges to current market demands. This launch highlights the tension between premium, convenient products and the reality of everyday grocery costs for many households.
