Calls for FIS Leadership Change Intensify

National ski associations have submitted formal requests to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) demanding the removal of President Johan Eliasch. The move stems from accusations of authoritarian leadership, financial misconduct, and a pro-Russia orientation. The complaints were filed by federations from:

  • Norway
  • the United States
  • Switzerland
  • Austria
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Canada

Disputes Over Governance

In a statement, Secretary General of the Norwegian Ski Federation, Ola Keil, remarked:

“We believe that the current president, Johan Eliasch, should no longer lead FIS. The reasons include a lack of transparency and engagement, as well as the use of shared funds that deplete the organization’s reserves and undermine the reputation of international skiing.”

Elections for a new FIS president are scheduled for June 10 and 11, 2026, in Belgrade, Serbia. In addition to Johan Eliasch, the candidates for the position are:

  • Hanna Harbo Falkenberg (Denmark)
  • Victoria Gosling (United Kingdom)
  • Alexander Ospelt (Liechtenstein)
  • Dexter Paine (United States)

Eliasch recently backed the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes under a neutral status and allowed Russian competitors who support the war against Ukraine to participate, sparking further controversy around his leadership.

These developments reflect growing tensions within the international sports community, where political and ethical issues increasingly influence the decisions of sporting organizations. The demand to oust Eliasch could mark a significant step toward reforming governance practices at FIS, especially amid ongoing global conflicts and their impact on sports. The situation also underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability in the leadership of international sports bodies.
