Wimbledon 2026: Ukrainian Players Learn Their First-Round Opponents

Ukraine will be represented by seven tennis players at Wimbledon 2026, with the draw now complete for the opening round. The highest-ranked among them, Elina Svitolina, is set to face fellow Ukrainian Daria Snigur in a highly anticipated all-Ukrainian clash. The tournament, one of the most prestigious in tennis, begins on June 29.

  • Oleksandra Oliynykova will take on McCartney Kessler of the United States;
  • Dayana Yastremska is scheduled to compete against Japan’s Aoi Ito;
  • Marta Kostyuk will battle Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska;
  • Anhelina Kalinina faces Kamilla Rakhimova from Uzbekistan;
  • Yuliia Starodubtseva goes up against Anna Blinkova, who competes under a neutral status.

Two players—Oliynykova and Yastremska—will kick off their campaigns on June 29, while the other five, including Svitolina and Kostyuk, begin play on June 30. Svitolina holds the best Wimbledon result for Ukraine, having reached the semifinals in both 2019 and 2023. She recently exited the Berlin tournament in the quarterfinals, losing in straight sets to Alexandra Eala of the Philippines.

Vondroušová’s Four-Year Ban Sparks Debate

Meanwhile, the tennis world is reacting to the four-year disqualification of Markéta Vondroušová, handed down on December 3, 2025, after she refused a doping test. Vondroušová explained that her refusal stemmed from severe psychological distress, adding that 'the anti-doping officer rang the doorbell late at night, did not identify himself, and failed to follow protocol.' She eventually provided a sample to a different officer three days after the incident.

As the Ukrainian players prepare for their pivotal Wimbledon matches, the Vondroušová case continues to stir discussion across the sports community. Success at Wimbledon could mark a significant milestone for the Ukrainian athletes, especially Svitolina, who brings extensive experience at this Grand Slam. At the same time, Vondroušová’s situation underscores the gravity of doping violations in sports and the critical need for procedural compliance, which can shape athletes' reputations and the broader industry.

As fans eagerly await the start of Wimbledon 2026, the anticipation surrounding the Ukrainian players is palpable.
