Mojtaba Khamenei Appointed as Iran's Supreme Leader

Following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on February 28, Iran's Assembly of Experts has formally appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new Supreme Leader. The elder Khamenei's death was the result of a joint high-tech operation conducted by the United States and Israel. According to journalist Amit Segal, the Israeli Air Force struck the facility where the Iranian leader was located, dropping 30 bombs on the complex.

International Reaction to the Appointment

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong disapproval of Mojtaba Khamenei's appointment. He stated:

'The son of Khamenei is unacceptable to me. We want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran.'
Trump further emphasized the need for a leader who is just and impartial, calling for improved relations with the United States, Israel, and other Middle Eastern nations:
'Do a great job. Treat the United States and Israel well, as well as the other countries of the Middle East—they are all our partners.'

In Israel, the reaction to Mojtaba Khamenei's appointment was similarly negative. An Israeli official declared: 'The long arm of the State of Israel will continue to pursue the successor and anyone who tries to appoint him.' The official also cast doubt on the Iranian people's desire to replace one ayatollah with another, stating: 'I doubt the Iranian people want to replace one ayatollah with another ayatollah.'

This leadership transition in Iran, a key regional power, is therefore being met with significant international concern from the U.S. and Israel. The appointment of the new leader is likely to influence Iran's domestic politics and its relations with the international community, particularly with nations that have actively intervened in Iranian affairs. In light of recent events, potential shifts in Iran's foreign policy and its relationship with the West will be a major focus for ongoing analysis and observation.
