General Syrskyi’s Visit to Southern Ukraine

Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, recently completed an operational trip to the country’s south, where he toured the Air Command ‘South’. During the visit, he evaluated the combat readiness of the command post and the crews operating surface-to-air missile and artillery systems tasked with protecting Ukraine’s airspace. Syrskyi also heard briefings from Lieutenant General Oleksandr Humeniuk, head of the Southern Air Command, focusing on how air defense systems are being adapted to meet evolving threats.

Attacks on Port Infrastructure

Syrskyi highlighted the enemy’s deliberate campaign against port infrastructure in southern Ukraine—targeting harbors, grain terminals, maritime logistics hubs, and other civilian sites. He stated:

‘The adversary continues its deliberate strikes on the port infrastructure of southern Ukraine—ports, grain terminals, maritime logistics facilities, and other civilian infrastructure.’ Oleksandr Syrskyi

According to Syrskyi, the enemy’s goal is to ‘disrupt the operation of the maritime corridor, strike at the state’s economy, and create additional security threats in the Black Sea region.’

Given the shortage of modern air defense systems and missiles, Syrskyi stressed the need to improve air defense management. He emphasized the following priorities:

  • enhancing aerial target detection capabilities,
  • expanding the use of tactical interceptor groups,
  • accelerating the deployment of new technological solutions.

‘Effective air defense today means protecting people, ensuring a stable economy, keeping ports and critical infrastructure running, and maintaining the country’s resilience in wartime,’ he said.

Syrskyi confirmed that Ukraine’s defense forces have seized the initiative in the Black Sea operational zone, effectively neutralizing the Russian fleet’s presence in both the Black and Azov Seas. ‘Our task is to prevent these plans from being realized,’ he stressed, calling for the rational use of available resources and for partners to supply modern anti-aircraft systems and ammunition to sustain effective combat operations.

This trip by Oleksandr Syrskyi to southern Ukraine underscores the critical importance of securing port infrastructure and air defenses amid active hostilities. Attacks on civilian assets essential to Ukraine’s economy demand swift protective and restorative measures. Improving air defense systems and strengthening cooperation with international partners on advanced technology deliveries are key to maintaining regional stability.

In light of the ongoing threats to Ukraine's maritime security, General Syrskyi's focus on enhancing air defense capabilities is crucial. This aligns with his recent visit to Odesa, where he examined the Neptune missiles and discussed the expansion of naval forces.
