Russian Army Suffered Major Losses in January 2023

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, disclosed that Russian forces sustained over 31,700 troops killed or seriously wounded in January 2023. He attributed these significant casualties to the combat operations of the Ukrainian military, which have substantially degraded the enemy's offensive capabilities. This figure highlights the intense and costly nature of the winter fighting during Russia's renewed assaults.

Ongoing Reforms to Enhance Troop Training

Syrskyi also emphasized that the Ukrainian military is continuously working to improve the quality of its personnel training. An audit of basic general military training, initiated last autumn, is ongoing. New recruits arriving from training centers now face a comprehensive final exam. Furthermore, the army is piloting the use of the Delta integrated combat management system for submitting electronic feedback, with the Air Assault Forces leading this testing initiative as they remain at the forefront of training development.

  • Command has reviewed reports on the integration of new recruits.
  • Measures for providing air cover for training grounds.
  • The construction of shelters, which is also part of the effort to enhance military preparation.

The reported Russian losses underscore the evolving tactics and strategy of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which are crucial in the current military context. These sustained efforts to refine training demonstrate Ukraine's serious commitment to building effective combat units, a critical factor for resilience in a protracted war. Such initiatives also bolster troop morale by demonstrating a commitment to adaptation and improvement in the face of changing battlefield conditions.
