Italian Curling Team Selection Sparks Nepotism Scandal Ahead of 2026 Olympics

Вибір команди італійських керлінгістів викликав обурення через підозри в фаворитизмі напередодні Олімпіади 2026 року.

Nepotism Allegations Rock Italian Curling Team

A major controversy has erupted within the Italian women's curling team just one week before the start of the 2026 Olympic tournament. Team leader Angela Romei, 28, has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge her exclusion from the Olympic squad. She was replaced by Rebecca Mariani, the 19-year-old daughter of the team's technical director, Marco Mariani. Curling, a sport of precision and strategy on ice, is particularly sensitive to team dynamics and selection fairness. Romei is the reigning Italian national champion and a silver medalist from the 2023 European Championships, underscoring her elite status in the sport.

Controversial Selection Process Under Scrutiny

The Italian National Curling Federation has rejected accusations of nepotism, while the World Curling Federation considers the selection an internal matter for the national body. Rebecca Mariani's father, Marco Mariani, was appointed technical director in 2024 and brings significant experience, including competing at the 2006 Olympics, winning five Italian championships, and previously coaching the Chinese national team.

In her legal filing, Angela Romei stated:

“This decision has nothing to do with sporting principle.”
She has sued both the national and world federations at CAS to overturn her removal. The case has generated substantial backlash among curling fans, who argue that Olympic team selection must be based solely on athletic merit rather than personal connections. This scandal emerges as the Italian team aims to peak for the Olympics, and the unresolved dispute could severely impact team morale and preparation. The outcome of Romei's appeal may prove critical for the squad's cohesion and chances of success in Beijing.
