Vladyslav Heraskevych Addresses Bot Attacks and Disqualification
Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has spoken out about recent bot attacks on his social media and debunked a myth that he received $800,000. He revealed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) disqualified him just before his first run at the 2026 Olympics due to his helmet, which features images of Ukrainian athletes killed by Russian forces. The IOC banned Heraskevych from competing with this helmet, stating it violates the Olympic Charter and the Guidelines on the Expression of Views by Athletes.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport also dismissed his appeal against the IOC's decision. Heraskevych noted that the accusations he faces online are absurd and baseless. He views these attacks as a form of recognition for his efforts and the work of volunteer foundations striving to improve the situation in Ukraine.
Clarifying the Record on Financial Aid
Furthermore, Heraskevych refuted the widespread misinformation about $800,000. He explained that he saw a Facebook message mentioning the transfer of that sum to families of the deceased but confirmed he never received any such money.
“It's all a huge myth. That's a crazy amount of money,” he emphasized.
Heraskevych also pointed out that, under IOC rules, he cannot officially comment on topics related to specific businesses or public figures until February 25. However, he stated that the funds he raises are directed to a charitable foundation, the name of which he cannot disclose until the ban period concludes.
This case highlights the complex relationship between international sports bodies and athlete advocacy, particularly during times of war. Heraskevych's disqualification and his comments on false rumors and online harassment underscore the challenges athletes face when expressing personal views on global issues. With the 2026 Winter Games approaching amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, the stance of athletes like Heraskevych can significantly influence international perceptions of the conflict.
