Vladyslav Heraskevych's Appeal

Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has called for the revocation of the 'Hero of Ukraine' title from legendary pole vaulter Serhiy Bubka. Heraskevych cites Bubka's role in allowing Russian athletes to compete under their national symbols at the World Masters Games and his alleged business dealings in occupied Ukrainian territories. Bubka, a celebrated figure in global athletics, is a six-time world champion, 35-time world record holder, and Olympic gold medalist. He has served as President of the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) since 2022.

The World Masters Games Controversy

The IMGA, under Bubka's leadership, permitted Russian athletes to display national symbols at the World Masters Games, a multi-sport festival for veteran athletes held every four years. The next edition is scheduled for May 17-30, 2025, in Taiwan, with over 25,000 athletes from 107 countries expected to participate. The IMGA's Instagram account further fueled controversy by reposting stories from Russian athletes, drawing sharp criticism from Ukraine's sporting community. This issue highlights the ongoing tension in international sports governance regarding Russia's participation since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

'I have long been firmly convinced that he (Serhiy Bubka) does not deserve to hold this title (Hero of Ukraine). Bubka has shown himself to be someone who panders to Russian interests. This was already evident with the situation at the World Masters Games, where they allowed the use of Russian flags. Mr. Bubka also has business in the occupied territories. Overall, his position, I think, is already clear to everyone. I call once again: this person should not hold the title of Hero of Ukraine. This title is now earned at a very high price. Unfortunately, most receive it posthumously. That Bubka wears it severely devalues the honor.' Vladyslav Heraskevych

Heraskevych's appeal underscores the deep divisions in assessing Bubka's recent actions and his influence on Ukrainian sports within the fraught context of international relations. In a time of war, the stances of prominent athletes carry significant weight for both their careers and the nation's global image. The debate surrounding Bubka reflects broader questions about loyalty, patriotism, and responsibility as Ukraine faces profound national challenges.
