Study indicates that taking screenshots can weaken how well people remember images

Remembering through images

Snapping photos or screenshots to preserve a moment may actually make it harder to recall. Researchers now believe there are specific cognitive reasons behind this effect, adding to a growing debate about whether digital tools help or hinder memory.

In a series of seven experiments involving 892 volunteers, people consistently scored worse when trying to remember images they had screenshotted compared with images they had simply looked at. On August 24, Science Alert covered the findings, which point to cognitive offloading and attention being diverted away from the event itself.

What the experiments revealed

To test the effect, researchers showed participants 44 artworks on phones. Afterward, they gave them a 10-minute distraction task. Then participants saw three similar versions of each image and had to identify the original. The results showed that screenshotted artworks were recognized less accurately than ones that had only been viewed.

Asking participants to recall whether they had seen an image or taken a screenshot did not change the outcome. The scientists suggest that the brain puts in less effort when information is already stored on a device, and that using a camera or phone can shift attention away from the experience, leaving fewer resources for forming a memory.

In one experiment, some participants were told they would be tested after 30 minutes and others after a month, though everyone was actually tested after 10 minutes. Both groups performed similarly, underscoring the reliability of the results.

The researchers concluded that screenshots are linked to a noticeable decline in memory and offer little benefit for learning except in specific situations. Earlier studies have produced mixed results; in some cases, taking photos can actually help people recall events. This new research therefore challenges the common assumption that saving screenshots helps us remember information.

The findings highlight how important it is to use technology intentionally when trying to store information. Since screenshots have become a routine part of daily life, understanding their effect on memory could help people find better ways to remember key details. Scientists are calling for more research to identify the best strategies for incorporating digital tools into learning and memory, which could eventually shape educational methods and how we engage with information.

While the recent study highlights the potential downsides of screenshotting on memory retention, it’s interesting to note that a separate long-term Finnish study found a correlation between increased screen time and improved cognitive abilities among teenagers.
