Slovakia's Position on Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated his position on Ukraine, emphasizing that the country is not ready for EU membership. Fico, who has repeatedly expressed skepticism about Ukraine's European integration, announced that Slovakia plans to block financial aid to Ukraine for 2026-2027. He also pointed to issues of corruption in Ukraine, claiming that no one knows where the funds provided by the EU have ended up.
Fico noted that Ukraine's accession to the EU by 2027 is unrealistic. He added that, in his opinion, Serbia is a significantly better candidate for EU membership. Slovakia, he said, intends to oppose the financial support for Ukraine that the EU has provided, amounting to about 177.5 billion euros.
“I will be the first to speak out against Ukraine’s accession to the EU,” emphasized Robert Fico, underlining his doubts about Ukraine's prospects for European integration.
This statement has raised concerns among Ukraine's supporters who hope for assistance from Europe amid the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the country.
Possible Consequences for Ukraine
Robert Fico's statements indicate a change in Slovakia's position regarding Ukraine in the context of European integration, which could have serious consequences for future relations between Kyiv and Brussels. As Ukraine seeks more support in its fight against aggression, such remarks may undermine hopes for swift progress in European integration processes and financial assistance from the EU. It is important to monitor further developments, as Slovakia's position may influence European policy towards Ukraine in general.
