Slovakia Sets EU Sanctions Condition: Russian Oil via 'Druzhba' Pipeline as Prerequisite

Словаччина висунула умову для санкцій ЄС: постачання російської нафти через Дружбу як необхідний фактор.

Slovakia's Stance on EU Sanctions

Slovakia has declared its willingness to back the EU's 20th sanctions package against Russia, but only on the condition that Russian oil deliveries resume via the 'Druzhba' pipeline. During a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár stated the country's support is contingent on the oil physically reaching Slovak territory.

"We are ready to support even the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, but only when the oil arrives on the territory of Slovakia," emphasized Blanár.

There is currently no confirmation that transit through the 'Druzhba' pipeline will be restored. This week, the EU's Foreign Affairs Council is set to discuss adopting the 20th sanctions package, as well as the potential release of a €90 billion loan for Ukraine. While Slovakia does not oppose the loan for Ukraine, it is prepared to block the sanctions approval if it does not receive guarantees on the pipeline's operation.

Slovakia's Energy Dependence

Consequently, Slovakia's final position on the Russian sanctions remains uncertain, hinging entirely on developments regarding its oil supply. This stance highlights the difficult balance many EU nations must strike between supporting collective foreign policy and securing their own critical energy needs. The 'Druzhba' pipeline is a vital energy artery for Slovakia, which remains heavily reliant on Russian resources. This internal pressure could impact the speed and unity of the EU's new sanctions package and its broader policy toward Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

As Slovakia navigates its position on EU sanctions, the situation underscores the intricate relationship between energy security and geopolitical decisions. This dependence on Russian oil not only affects Slovakia's stance but also plays a crucial role in the broader context of EU support for Ukraine.
