Slovenia Announces NATO Withdrawal and Lifting of Sanctions Against Russia

Словенія оголосила про вихід з НАТО та скасування санкцій щодо РФ.

New Slovenian Government Takes Office

On June 4, Slovenia's National Assembly approved a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Janez Janša. The vote saw 49 lawmakers in favor and 30 opposed, marking the first time in the country's history that a government has been formed exclusively by center-right political parties.

Statements from New Leadership

Zoran Stevanović, the newly appointed Speaker of Parliament, announced plans to visit Moscow. He stated:

“I want to build bridges and foster good cooperation with all nations, regardless of the wall erected between the West and the East. Therefore, I intend to visit Moscow in the near future.” - Zoran Stevanović

Stevanović also declared the government's intention to hold a referendum on Slovenia's exit from NATO. He emphasized that “we promised the people a vote on leaving NATO, and we will deliver on that promise.” Slovenia joined the alliance in 2004, with roughly two-thirds of citizens supporting membership in a previous referendum.

This new administration could significantly redirect Slovenia's political course, particularly regarding relations with Russia and its NATO membership. Such a shift may raise concerns among Western allies, as NATO has been a cornerstone of Slovenia's security framework. A potential withdrawal could have serious implications for both national and regional stability.
