Hearing Concludes at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has concluded its hearing on the appeal against the disqualification of Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych from the 2026 Olympic Games. The athlete, who commented after the proceedings, denounced the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision as unjust. The Ukrainian side is formally challenging the ban through the CAS process.
The disqualification of Vladyslav Heraskevych stems from his act of honoring fallen colleagues with a tribute on his helmet. The hearing took place on February 12, with his case being led by lawyer Yevhen Pronin, who filed the appeal with CAS. Following the hearing, Heraskevych expressed gratitude to his legal counsel, stating:
“Yes, I believe we were heard. I am grateful to Yevhen Pronin, who is handling this case—he prepared brilliantly.”The athlete further emphasized his confusion over the grounds for his disqualification, arguing that the IOC has failed to adequately explain how his case differs from others. 'I still don't understand why I was disqualified,' Heraskevych noted.
Heraskevych also voiced concerns about threats from the Russian side, highlighting that he has been mentioned in propagandist shows. 'Yesterday [February 12] was a terrible day. It became terrible not only during the competition but also the night before—there was heavy shelling of Kyiv,' he added. The athlete believes his ban is unfair and serves as a tool for Russian propaganda.
“I have been unfairly suspended. I believe this action by the IOC aids Russian propaganda.”
“As my father said so well yesterday, they didn't suspend me, they suspended Ukraine. I am standing here for the dignity of my country,” Heraskevych remarked, underscoring that his fight is not just personal but for his nation. This case highlights the intense pressures faced by Ukrainian athletes who compete internationally while their homeland endures conflict.
