2026 Oscar Honors and Support for Ukraine
Sean Penn was unable to attend the 2026 Academy Awards ceremony because he was traveling to Ukraine. The actor won the Oscar for 'Best Supporting Actor' for his role in the film 'One Battle After Another'. The ceremony this year also celebrated other winners in the major acting categories. Penn's absence underscores the depth of his commitment to Ukraine, a cause he has prioritized over Hollywood's biggest night.
Penn, who has actively visited Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, is no stranger to showing his solidarity. He has met with soldiers of the 3rd Separate Special Operations Regiment named after Prince Sviatoslav the Brave. Furthermore, the actor got a tattoo of the Ukrainian trident last year, highlighting his connection to the country. At the time of getting the tattoo, Penn had already visited Ukraine nine times since the war began.
The Award Ceremony and a Message of Support
While presenting the Oscar statuette, Kieran Culkin, accepting on Penn's behalf, noted:
“Sean Penn couldn't be here tonight, or wouldn't be, so I'll take this on his behalf.” — Kieran Culkin
This indicates that the actor remains active in his support for Ukraine, despite his career achievements.
- At the 2026 Oscars, Michael B. Jordan was named 'Best Actor' for his role in the film 'Sinners'.
- Jessie Buckley was awarded 'Best Actress' for her performance in the leading female role of Agnes, wife of William Shakespeare, in the film 'Hamnet'.
Sean Penn's recognition at the 2026 Oscars highlights not only his acting skill but also the importance of his personal stance in supporting Ukraine during wartime. By continuing to visit the country and engage in humanitarian initiatives, Penn demonstrates how cultural figures can influence society and draw attention to critical global issues. This award serves as both a recognition of his talent and a symbol of his dedication to supporting the Ukrainian people.
