New 1000 hryvnia bill without Vernadsky: historian's proposals


Historian and head of the Institute of National Memory Oleksandr Alfiorov expressed his opinion that the new 1000 hryvnia bill should not feature the image of Volodymyr Vernadsky. He considers such a choice unjust and proposes to replace this figure with another historical figure. Details in the interview for the publication 'Glavkom'.



On the thousand hryvnia bill is a 'vatnik', who did not separate himself from the Russian space, although he was Ukrainian by ethnicity.


According to the historian, possible alternatives for the place on the bill instead of Vernadsky could be Pavlo Skoropadsky or Symon Petliura. Alfiorov believes that Vernadsky's face should not be on the banknote, as he 'never saw Ukraine as independent'.



Reformation of the national symbol


Alfiorov explains that the depiction of the Academy of Sciences on the bill is related to Pavlo Skoropadsky, who symbolizes the progress of Ukrainian science, but also signals the need to reform this symbol. According to the historian, this situation reflects the problems in domestic society.
