Private Isle of Mallaigragh Goes Under the Hammer

A private Scottish island, Mallaigragh, has been put up for auction with a starting bid of £350,000 (approximately €405,000). Spanning 36 hectares, it is part of Scotland's first UNESCO-recognized geopark. The auction is scheduled for June 9 and is being handled by the real estate agency Savills.

What Makes the Island Special

Mallaigragh is the northernmost island in the Summer Isles archipelago, situated off Scotland’s northwest coast. Access is by boat from Ullapool or Old Dornie, or via helicopter. On the island stands a cabin equipped with solar panels, a wood-burning stove, and a composting toilet. A rainwater collection system is also in place. According to Savills, 'the cabin is being sold fully furnished and is ready for both short getaways and extended stays.'

Wildlife enthusiasts visiting Mallaigragh can encounter a variety of animals, including:

  • seals
  • dolphins
  • otters
  • greylag geese
  • minke whales

The island offers a rare chance to immerse oneself in nature and seclusion, making it an appealing prospect for potential buyers.

Scotland has seen previous island sales, such as Harbor Island, a 9.7-hectare property purchased in 2017 for £650,000. That island had been listed for £1.25 million. Mallaigragh could become the next notable addition to Scotland’s unique real estate market.

The sale of Mallaigragh highlights a growing interest in distinctive Scottish properties, especially as demand rises for remote retreats. As part of a UNESCO geopark, the island may attract not only private buyers but also investors eyeing opportunities in tourism or eco-friendly projects in the region.
