What the Slovak National Party Is Demanding
Andrej Danko, leader of the Slovak National Party (SNS), has demanded that Prime Minister Robert Fico halt any backing of Ukraine’s European Union integration until the next parliamentary elections. Danko publicly objected to Fico’s recent talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The statement, posted on Danko’s Facebook page, has stirred debate within Slovak political circles.
Earlier, Fico and Zelenskyy met at the European Political Community summit in Armenia, where they agreed to coordinate efforts and share experiences related to EU integration. Fico also held a phone conversation with the Ukrainian president, discussing bilateral ties, Kyiv’s EU path, and conditions for ending the war.
SNS Party Stance
In his statement, Danko argued that
“the SNS believes the prime minister of the Slovak Republic lacks the authority to declare on Slovakia’s behalf that Ukraine will receive support for EU accession.”As a result, the SNS is demanding a moratorium on supporting Ukraine’s EU membership for the entire term of the current parliament. This position could significantly reshape Slovakia’s political landscape and its relationship with Ukraine.
The SNS’s demands reflect growing internal tensions in Slovakia over the country’s foreign policy, particularly regarding Ukraine. With Ukraine’s ongoing war and its push for EU integration, the SNS stance may shift political discourse in Slovakia and affect future ties between Bratislava and Kyiv. As elections approach, this issue could become a key factor for voters and political parties alike.
The internal political dynamics in Slovakia are further complicated by external pressures, as highlighted by the European Parliament's call to freeze EU funds for Slovakia due to concerns over Fico's adherence to the rule of law. This situation underscores the delicate balance Slovakia must navigate between EU relations and domestic political demands, particularly as the upcoming elections loom on the horizon.
