Ukraine is facing two serious problems – outbreaks of rabies and African swine fever. Experts warn that these infections not only threaten animals but can also be dangerous to humans. Candidate of Biological Sciences Vitaliy Smagol points out the criticality of the situation.

According to him, there are two types of epizootics prevalent in our country – rabies in predators and African swine fever. The spread of infections is driven by the increasing population of predators, which may affect human safety. For example, in 2024, two cases of rabies among adults were already recorded in some regions.

Threat of infection spread

According to the Center for Public Health of Ukraine, the number of rabies cases among animals and humans is constantly rising. The scientist calls for regulating the population of predators to prevent further spread of diseases.

«The only way out is to radically reduce the population. I do not advocate for mass extermination of animals, but if we want to have a healthy society – we must address this issue,» noted the expert.

African swine fever

Besides rabies, Ukrainians are facing another threat – African swine fever. The spread of this infection may lead to serious economic and ecological problems. Specialists call for effective measures to control the situation.

«Since the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has recorded 37 outbreaks of ASF, of which 14 are among domestic pigs, and 23 are among wild boars. This situation requires immediate intervention and control from authorities and specialists,» emphasized Vitaliy Smagol.

Outbreaks of rabies and African swine fever pose a serious threat to Ukraine, which may have negative consequences for both animals and humans. Effective control of these infections requires immediate measures and attention from authority structures and specialists.
