Jeff Landry’s Trip to Greenland

In March, Jeff Landry—the U.S. president’s special envoy to Greenland—will make his inaugural visit to the island. His itinerary includes attending the Future Greenland business conference in Nuuk. This trip comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Denmark, an issue now central to bilateral relations.

Landry, who also serves as the governor of Louisiana, is traveling to the Danish territory as part of preparations for discussions on key matters, including Greenland’s sovereignty—a topic that remains unresolved. Denmark and Greenland have already initiated talks with the United States under a framework agreement.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has previously weighed in on Greenland, stating that ‘the United States should seize Greenland for national security reasons.’

Meanwhile, in Denmark, coalition negotiations to form a new government are now entering their sixth week, following parliamentary elections held in March.

Outlook for the Visit

Jeff Landry’s visit could mark a significant step in strengthening ties among the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, particularly as discussions unfold regarding the island’s sovereignty and economic development. Running parallel to these diplomatic efforts, Denmark’s ongoing government formation process may also shape the country’s foreign policy decisions, including its collaboration with Washington.
